At 7:34 p.m. Thursday, October 11, Lakewood Fire District 2 responded to reports of a fire in the laundry facility at Western State Hospital. Firefighters arrived at 7:40 p.m. and saw heavy black smoke coming from the roof and the back of the building. Engine 214 was first on scene and attacked the fire by placing hose through the windows of the structure to cool the room. Ladder 220 gained entry to the structure by cutting through a metal roll up door. A second alarm was called at 7:58 p.m. Firefighters were then able to attack the fire and it was deemed under control at 8:34 p.m.
No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. Damages are estimated at approximately $500,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
