The first of a trio of Lakewood United special candidate forums was held Thursday morning. The session featured candidates for the Lakewood Fire District Board of Commissioners.
Candidates Bart Dalton and Darrel Shiley Jr. gave brief rundowns of their experience and explained why they wanted to serve on the commission before a group of about 50 members of Lakewood United. Hugh Hedges was master of ceremonies for the 7 am session at Bur’s Restaurant.
Lakewood Fire Department commission candidates Darrel Shiley Jr. (left) and Bart Dalton address Lakewood United members Thursday at the first of a trio of political candidate forums.
Shiley said he has lived in Lakewood for nine years and as a registered nurse he has seen first-hand the work of the firefighters. “Last year the department had 9,000 calls and 85 percent of those were for medical emergencies. My nursing experience will help me work with the commission to make sure our firefighters remain outstanding,” Shiley said.
Dalton, a lakewood resident for more than 30 years is a stockbroker by profession. He served as a fire commissioner for six months when he was appointed to fill an unexpired term. He resigned when his firm was involved with selling the fire department bonds and it became a conflict of interest.
The candidate said he has served the department on a strategic planning committee, levy committee and several additional positions.
In response to questions from the audience, both candidates said any merger with Steilacoom and DuPont departments would require the situations being a win-win for both sides.
The next Lakewood United forum will be Thursday, Sept. 27 and it will feature candidates for Lakewood City Council position 6. Speaking will be incumbent Claudia Thomas and her opponent, Lisa Ikeda. Mike Stevenson will serve as master of ceremonies for the session.
The next week, candidates for Clover Park School District position 2 will be featured. Carole Jacobs is seeking a return to the board and opposing her is Dan Livingston. This meeting will be moderated by Steve Cofchin. All Lakewood United meetings are held at 7 am on Thursday at Bur’s Restaurant.
