Family, friends, Soldiers and the Fort Lewis community will remember Sgt. 1st Class Rocky H. Herrera, 43, of Salt Lake City, Sgt. Cory L. Clark, 25, of Plant City, Fla., and Sgt. Bryce D. Howard, 24, of Vancouver, Wash., in a memorial ceremony to be held Wed., Sept. 12 at 3:30 p.m. in the Main Post Chapel.
According to the Dept. of Defense, the three Fort Lewis Soldiers assigned to the 864th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade died Aug. 28 in Jaji, Afghanistan, from wounds sustained from an improvised explosive device while they were deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Herrera and Clark were assigned to the battalion’s 585th Engineer Pipeline Company. Howard was assigned to the Headquarters Support Company. The 864th Engineer Battalion deployed to Afghanistan in March.
Herrera, a Construction Equipment Supervisor, entered military service on Aug. 25, 1986. His current term of active service began on April 4, 1996. He served three years in Hanau, Germany, with the 38th Engineer Co. as a crane operator and squad leader before reporting to Fort Irwin, Calif., in May 1999, where he served with the 31st Maintenance Co. In August 2002 he reported to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and served with the 5th Engineer Bn. as a section sergeant. He also performed drill sergeant duty with the 169th Engineer Bn., and served as an instructor for the 577th Engineer Battalion. On Aug. 14, 2005, he reported to Fort Lewis and was assigned to 585th Engineer Pipeline Company, 864th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade, where he served as a platoon
Clark, a General Construction Equipment Operator, entered military service on April 26, 2001. He reported to Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and Fort Benning, Ga., for training before he was assigned to Fort Lewis on Sept. 30, 2001. He was assigned to the 18th Engineer Co., 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team) and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom with that brigade from November 2003 through November 2004. He was reassigned to the 585th Engineer Pipeline Company, 864th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade on May 13, 2005.
Howard, a Technical Engineer, entered the military on Jan. 16, 2002. He attended initial entry training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, and then reported to Camp Henry, Korea, in August 2002, where he served a 12-month tour. He reported to Fort Lewis on Aug. 19, 2003, and was assigned to 864th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade.
