Pierce College Fort Steilacoom is accepting registrations for a new cooperative preschool beginning Sept. 20 which will give parents and children between the ages of three and five an opportunity to “learn together” in a play-oriented environment.
Hours of the Parent Education Cooperative Preschool coordinated by the college will be 12:30-2:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday Sept. 20-Dec. 7 in the Children’s Center in the Olympic Building at Pierce College Fort Steilacoom. In the morning, the center serves as a learning laboratory for students in the college’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs and in the evening serves as the site for evening childcare.
The learning environment in the center is designed to encourage a child’s physical, intellectual, emotional and social development according to Michelle Barnes, parent education coordinator for the Pierce College District.
“As with the five other co-op preschools affiliated with the Pierce College, the Fort Steilacoom co-op preschool will be in session September through June,” she explained.
Teacher for the new co-op preschool is Yumi Heath who has an ECE background; parent education instructor is Virginia Davis.
To participate in the co-op preschool, parents, family members or other adult caregivers of children enrolled are required to serve as the teacher’s assistant six to nine hours a month. They also are required to attend two orientation sessions in September and two hours of family life discussions each month. Daytime or evening options are available for the discussion sessions.
“During these sessions, we emphasize how parents and other adults can participate in a child’s learning experience,” added Barnes.
She indicated leadership development opportunities for adults participating in the co-op preschool include serving on the board of directors or on board committees.
Co-op preschool tuition and fees include a one-time annual registration fee of $50, $33 a quarter for the family life discussions and a $60 monthly fee for each child enrolled.
Registration information can be obtained by calling (253) 840-8445, in person in Room 163 of the Olympic Building at Fort Steilacoom or Room 102C of the Administration Building at the Puyallup Campus or by visiting the Fort Steilacoom co-op preschool web site: www.pierce.ctc.edu/early-childhood/preschool/index.php.
