According to the Dept. of Defense, Cpl. Rhett A. Butler, 22, of Fort Worth, Texas died July 20 in Khan Bani Sa’d, Iraq, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device (IED) struck his vehicle. He was assigned to 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team), Fort Lewis, Wash. The brigade deployed to Iraq in April, 2007.
Butler enlisted in the U.S. Army on July 29, 2004, and completed Initial Entry Training at Fort Knox, Ky. He reported to Fort Lewis June 26, 2005, and was assigned to 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division (Stryker Brigade Combat Team). He was assigned to the brigade’s 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Regiment in Jan., 2007.
His civilian and military education includes a high school diploma (2003), and the Military Occupational Specialty 19D (Cavalry Scout) Qualification Course (2005).
His awards and decorations include the Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Army Service Ribbon.
