Gloria Grubert was awarded the Bernie Ootkin non-Rotarian of the Year Award at Lakewood Rotary Club’s annual installation dinner on Saturday, June 30. The Bernie Ootkin Award is given to a person in the Lakewood community who best exemplifies the Rotary motto, Service Above Self, but is not a member of a Rotary Club.
Bud Montgomery reads nomination letters as he presents the Bernie Ootkins Non-Rotarian of the Year Award to Gloria Grubert during the Lakewood Rotary Club’s annual installation dinner Saturday, June 30.
Mrs. Grubert was recognized with the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellowship, a Rotary International award that comes from a $1,000 contribution to the Rotary Foundation’s international humanitarian efforts. The family of the late Dr. Bernie Ootkin, for whom the Lakewood award is named, annually funds this recognition.
In the nominating letter from Lakewood Police Chief and Lions Club member Larry Saunders, he wrote, “Kids occupy the biggest portion of Gloria’s heart.¬† First with Campfire Girls, and then with the Boys & Girls Club, she has been a mover and shaker in Lakewood in reaching out to kids who need a helping hand.¬† More than any citizen volunteer, she is responsible for the expansion of the Boys & Girls Club in Lakewood.¬† She is a great resource to this City and it would honor us all to see her so recognized.”
Further praise came from Carrie Prudente-Holden, COO of the Boys & Girls Club. “What impresses me most about Gloria is her compassion, warmth and dedication to whatever she is involved with and especially causes supporting children. She is always there-.whether to clear dishes or talk to groups. She does these things freely and with comfort and ease. She is a remarkable volunteer and an inspiration to those around her. Gloria is very much deserving of your award for service above self.”
Bud Montgomery, a member of the Lakewood Rotary Club’s Paul Harris Foundation Committee, made the presentation before more than 100 Rotarians, their spouses and a table full of Lakewood Lions and Mrs. Grubert’s husband and two daughters.
