The official Veterans Memorial Day service is scheduled for Monday, May 28, 2007 at 2 p.m. in Mountain View Memorial Park’s New Veterans Memorial section. Parking is free and there is no charge for admittance. The service is presented by the Pierce County Veterans Advisory Council in conjunction with the staff of Mountain View Funeral Home, Crematory and Memorial Park and has been a community tradition for over 35 years.
Members of our Greatest Generation began the tradition as a way to honor the memory of their fallen comrades. As the observance continued over the years, it gained participation from veterans groups and auxiliaries from all over the state and support from local and state politicians.
But the world has not remained a peaceful place since the Greatest Generation rallied behind their troops and veterans, and there is a new generation of fallen heroes. With this in mind, the PCVAC and Mountain View decided to make a few additions to this year’s service. In addition to the traditional recognition of WWI and WWII veterans, there will be a wreath presentation in which each military branch honors those who have sacrificed throughout the years in the name of freedom and liberty. There will also be military themed music performed by the Brass Quintet from the 56th Army Band of I Corps at Fort Lewis. Finally, there will be the opportunity for all those attending the service to make a donation in support of our current troops and their families.
The PCVAC and Mountain View invite everyone to join us at the Memorial Day service as we go beyond politics and personal convictions and remember the ones who died serving our country.
