Sam Scott, Steilacoom Historical School District #1 board member, has announced his decision to seek re-election. In a statement released April 25, Scott, who fills Director Position 5, said:
“Our school district is in better shape now than it was before I was elected to the board. I would like to continue with a second term and finish a lot of the work the board started in my first term. We have negotiated multi-year contracts with our teachers and staff. We have gone from stagnation and impasse in our facilities planning to a comprehensive district-wide facilities plan. With the overwhelming support of our capital improvements plan and bond by our voters, we have constructed a new multipurpose room for Anderson Island Elementary; tripled the size of Chloe Clark Elementary school; started construction on the new Pioneer Middle School; replaced the track and bleachers at Steilacoom High School, and we have made significant progress in the modernization and expansion of SHS which will include a new auxiliary gym and a new classroom wing.
“We have engaged and leveraged technology in partnering with K12, Inc., to create the first state-wide K through 8 virtual school. Its success in enrollment exceeded all of our expectations and has demonstrated our district’s ability to perceive and fill a need not previously addressed in public education.
“Our children are receiving a first-class education as shown through the improvement in our WASL test scores. In conjunction with our teachers and administrators, we have worked hard to solve curriculum issues and to provide the tools and facilities our staff needs to continue their excellent work. I think the proof of that work is self-evident.
“I have the privilege of being part of a vibrant, visionary school board willing to tackle tough issues and solve problems that have placed SHSD#1 as a leader in public education in our state. I would like to continue to be part of that team and continue to work for the improvement in the quality of education we provide our district’s students. The work we do is critical to every one of our student’s success in life. I believe I can continue to contribute to the success of our district and our staff, but most importantly, to our students. I ask for your support in re-electing me to the school board.
