Thursday evening April 12th, University Place Fire was dispatched for a two car head on collision on Cirque near Bridgeport Way. Firefighters found two cars with major damage and the drivers of each car trapped and in critical condition.
Calling for more assistance from UP Fire and Lakewood Fire, Medics and EMTs began patient care while trying to gain better access to the drivers. Both drivers were pinned below the waist and hydraulic powered cutters commonly called the “Jaws of Life” had to be used to extricate them.
One patient had to be flown by Airlift NW to Harbor View Trauma Center in Seattle. The Driver of truck was taken to Tacoma General Trauma Center.
Witnesses stated that “the driver of the red car was passing in the turn lane at a very high rate of speed when he lost control turning into oncoming traffic.”
