We will all agree that opening our tax bill this year was a shocker. At first glance, it may appear that school district taxes are higher than what was promised at voting time, but that’s not the case, according to SHSD Finance Director, Lark Moore.
The district has kept its promise to local tax payers that the M&O levy rate is no higher than $2.87/$1,000. In fact, it is 1.98/$1,000 this year. The Bond election team estimated an increase of around $1 over the rate at the time of bond election. This also has proved to be true as promised: $1.51/$1,000 then and $2.50/$1,000 now. Much of the change is due to the extreme increase in property values and the accelerated timeline of the new building projects in Steilacoom.
