Alaska has its Iditarod; Cherrydale Primary School has the “I-Did-A-Read”.
While the former is a two-week, 1,000-mile race from Anchorage to Nome, the local primary school reading marathon, inspired by the famous Alaskan race, is a month-long event that’s part of Cherrydale’s reading program. While the 49th state’s dog sled mushers were to begin their cross-state trek on March 4, Cherrydale K-2 students embarked on their personal 1,000 minutes per student reading challenge on March 2.
Race results of students’ reading accomplishments will be posted each week in each class wing, and the winners announced at the end of March, says teacher Kathy Thomas.
