A sure sign of Spring in Steilacoom is the sight of middle school students marching up and down Chambers Street, next to the building.
The early morning marching drill is part of the band’s practice for the annual floral parades in April. It’s just one of many events on the band’s schedule this spring.
Both the Middle School and High School Jazz Bands recently participated in the 40th annual Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho at Moscow. This year’s trip marked the first time for the high school jazz band to participate in the renowned festival.
“It was a memorable trip. I was really proud of them,” said Bruce Folmer, SHSD Band Director.
Results of the Feb. 23-25 competition won’t be known for a few weeks, he added.
Upcoming band events include the April 14 Junior Daffodil Parade and the April 21 Daffodil Parade. Members of the Washington Cheer Academy also will participate in those events. In May band members will travel to Disneyland.
Band members also are preparing for the March 20 combined concerts at the high school, at 7 p.m. Both bands are rehearsing for the traditional Spring Concert in Pioneer Park. Date and time for the outdoor concert are yet to be determined.
SHS Jazz Band members who participated at the Idaho festival included Gavin Thomas, Marie Bruno, Kyle Rebillion, Zack Billman, Ryan Zboralski, Ryan Edington, Tom Truitt, Andrew Min, Ben Pearson, Jeremy Espeth, Ben McBride, Dylan Flynn, Noel LeRoy, Jordan Owings, Edwin Milano, Mike Clark and Natalie Sauriol.
