Three over-size envelopes (red, white and green) over-flowing with hand-made Hearts, were delivered during a special Mail Call at Steilacoom’s Cherrydale Primary School on Feb. 8.
Accepting the mail, on behalf of the 504th MP Battalion soldiers, were Capt. Josh McCulley, Capt. Jayson Sweet, SFC Mario Benson, and PFC Koa Pickard. Battalion photographer PFC Amie McMillan recorded the activity for the battalion’s archive.
The five soldiers reported for duty at Cherrydale Primary at 0900 to lead more than half a dozen P.E. workouts for the school’s second graders that morning.
The invigorating fitness session, headed up by PTA volunteer Pat Firestone and a staff of other school volunteers, featured a full workout that included pull-ups, sit-ups and more. Students spent about six minutes at each Workout Station. Under the leadership of PFC Pickard, the students, chanting the Friendship Cadence: “Look around, what do you see?” quick-marched 1-2, 1-2, LRLR to an outdoor P.E. site.
After the Workout the soldiers sorted through their mail and said they’d be back on Feb. 20 for another PE session. They also promised to return later in the month to begin constructing the school’s playground labyrinth. The battalion is the school’s community connector partner, said CD teacher Kathy Thomas.
Labyrinth construction is scheduled to begin and end in April. The groundbreaking will be held on April 6, Thomas added.
Before the soldiers returned to Ft. Lewis they met with the school’s mascot, the Cherrydale Cheetah for one last photo opportunity. (note: this is a smaller version of the one that debuted last year).
