Pierce County’s new $11.2 million ferry will begin service between Steilacoom and Anderson and Ketron islands Monday, Feb. 5. The MV Steilacoom II, which was christened in a public ceremony Jan. 6, will be used on an alternating schedule with the MV Christine Anderson, extending the life of each vessel.
Together the two ferries will provide more consistent and stable service for island residents. The Steilacoom II is nearly a mirror image of the Christine Anderson. At 216 feet, the new vessel is 3 feet longer and 2 feet wider and has a larger cabin and pilot house. Each ferry has a 54-vehicle capacity, but the Steilacoom II can carry 300 passengers (or 325 with additional crew) to the Christine Anderson’s 250. The service speed is the same for both, 11.4 knots.
