Outgoing Chair Bunney, right, passes the gavel to Chair-elect Lee
Councilmembers on January 9 elected Councilmember Terry Lee to succeed Councilmember Shawn Bunney as Pierce County Council chair. Lee represents District 7, which includes both sides of the Narrows Bridge — the Gig Harbor and Key peninsulas and Fox Island to the west and University Place and Fircrest to the east.
“Chairman Bunney has done a masterful job of leading the council these past two years, and while I’m in the wheelhouse I’ll try my best to keep us off the rocks as well,” Lee said. “We’ve got a busy year ahead of us and a good budget to guide us, so I look forward to getting started.”
Most recently the council’s vice chair, Lee was first elected to the council in 2002 and was sworn in for his second term yesterday. Councilmember Calvin Goings will replace Lee as vice chair and will preside over meetings in the chair’s absence. Goings’ District 2 includes Browns Point, Dash Point, East Tacoma, Fife, Northeast Tacoma, Puyallup, Summit View and Summit-Waller.
Bunney, who represents District 1, will take over as executive pro tem. The position goes to a councilmember who will carry out most of county executive’s duties in the event of the executive’s absence or temporary disability — with the exception of appointing or removing officers or vetoing council actions. District 1 comprises much of Eastern Pierce County including Buckley, Wilkeson, Carbonado, Lake Tapps, Bonney Lake, Sumner, Edgewood, Milton, South Prairie, Orting and Graham.
The council meets Tuesdays at 3 p.m. on the 10th floor of the County-City Building, 930 Tacoma Ave. S., Room 1045, in Tacoma. Council committees meet at other times during the week — visit piercecountywa.org/council for more information.
