It’s been almost two decades since Tony Lambert played for the Sentinels.
On Dec. 30, this Class of ’84 basketball player teamed up with more than two dozen former SHS BB players for Steilacoom’s traditional end-of-year alumni BB game.
Final score: 88 (red) to 85 (yellow).
Sporting bright red and yellow shirts, designed by Elmer and Dwight Lago, the collection of former SHS players entertained the fans with their combined talents.
“Thanks, Elmer and Dwight, for finally bringing Steilacoom attire into the 21st century,” said SHS BB coach Gary Wusterbarth. Lago and Lago also have made other school uniforms, as well as the girls’ varsity team uniforms.
Wearing standard B/W-stripped referee shirts, SHS coaches Wusterbarth and Bruce Hayes, ensured that play was fair-although some of their calls could have been challenged. Gordy Winslow and Skip Lemming were the timekeepers.
At halftime, Jonathan Tinsley, SHS 2000, was honored with the SHS Alumnus of the Year award. The honor, presented by Steilacoom Historical Education Foundation, was presented in recognition of Tinsley’s life saving efforts this past October.
After the final buzzer sounded, players posed for team photos, socialized with fans, and then headed home to “settle down for a long winter’s nap.”
Thirteen games remain in the team’s 2006-07 season, with tip off time at 7 p.m. this Friday, Jan. 5 at Tenino.
The Sentinels began their 2006-07 season play in the 2A Nisqually League. The league consists of only five teams, giving Steilacoom eight league games and 12 non-leagues games.
During District Playoffs, Nisqually League teams will combine with 2A Olympic League teams to determine berths for State. The state tournament will be played at the Tacoma Dome.
