Lakewood Boy Scout Troop 51 is featured in the November edition of “Boys Life” for their snow caving activity on Mount Rainier. “Boy’s Life” is a national magazine reaching over one million readers. The troop was recognized for their adventure and publication by Mayor Claudia Thomas and the Lakewood City Council at the recent City Council meeting.
The troop prepared in advance before heading up to the mountain by discussing the different types of snow shelters and safety precautions that must be taken, including the proper clothing to wear. The adventure required digging their own snow caves and sleeping in them overnight at Mount Rainier. For many of the boys, this was not their first time snow caving.
The troop participates in many activities during the year and is open to boys ages 12-17 or that have finished the 5th grade. Boy Scout Troop 51 meets every Monday at 7 p.m. at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church on Gravelly Lake Drive.
