The Selden cabin in 2005.
Rick Selden, owner of Ed Selden Floor Covering in Lakewood, had the cabin he and his family had built in Packwood at the edge of the Cowlitz River totally destroyed in the recent rainstorm and floods. The cabin, originally built by Rick’s father, Ed Selden, in 1967, had withstood many floods and had to be repaired several times over the years due to the river problems.
With the cabin washed away, this picture shows a good deal of the annex foundation already gone.
But, this storm was the ultimate, according to Selden. The cabin itself had just been completely restored from the flood just three years ago. The garage and apartment building adjacent to the cabin has been undermined by the river. Selden says he expects to tear it down. Will he rebuild? “I doubt it,” he says. “I don’t think I can get a permit to do it and if I started to rebuild I hope someone will shoot me!” Selden declared.
