An additional performance has been added to Lakewood Playhouse’s production of Thornton Wilder’s American classic, “Our Town.”
Artistic Managing Director Marcus Walker stated that he would add an extra date, the last Thursday of the run, as an Actor Appreciation performance. That is, all profits for the evening of November 9 will be divided among cast and crew to thank them for all their dedication and hard work.
Lakewood Playhouse casts are volunteers. Whether amateur or professional, as a general rule, they receive no compensation for their hours of work.
The average cast member spends approximately four hours preparing for and giving an audition. If cast, they spend three hours a night, five nights a week for the following five weeks rehearsing with the rest of the cast and untold hours memorizing lines. The week prior to opening is affectionately called “Hell Week.” This involves half again the number of hours plus two all day technical rehearsals before the final dress rehearsal night. After the show is mounted, there are at least four weeks of three to five performances each week.
All told, this adds up to as much as 200 hours per person, all out of the love for the theatre – or because they are just hams!
This doesn’t even take into account the time spent by the director for as much as six months just to interpret the nuances of the play; the set, light and sound designer’s hours nor the back stage crew’s time running the show.
Walker hopes that the turnout for the additional performance will surpass even the regular dates in order to give the cast and crew a well-earned monetary thank you.
“Tell your friends,” Walker said. “If you’ve already seen the production, this would be a great time to see it again and bring someone with you.”
“Our Town” continues at the Lakewood Playhouse Thursday, Friday and Saturday, November 9, 10 and 11 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, November 12 at 2 p.m. Tickets range from $10.50 to $18.50. Reservations can be made online by going to www.lakewoodplayhouse.org or by calling the theatre at (253) 588-0042.
The Lakewood Playhouse is located in the northeast section of the Lakewood Towne Center next to the Pierce Transit Terminal.
