Carol Wier, a busy and much respected Lakewood volunteer recently recognized as the Non-Rotarian Citizen of the Year, accompanied Daisy in full patriotic attire around Waughop Lake as part of Monday’s Freedom Walk.
The Washington State Chapter of the national organization, Operation Homefront hosted a Freedom Walk around Waughop Lake in Ft. Steilacoom Park on Monday, September 11th. The event was to commemorate the heroism and sacrifices being made on a daily basis by members of military and their families. About 60 people or families took part in the first-time event and received custom t-shirts as a souvenir.
Cliff LeCompte, a U.S. Navy Vietnam war veteran and member of the of VFW chapter 1263 of Renton takes part in the Freedom Walk with family members Daniel and Sarah. Behind them is Larry Wywadis of Lakewood.
The event was sponsored by TriWest, the Department of Defense contractor that manages the administration of Tricare, the health care delivery system for active duty and retired military personnel and their families, and Kiel Mortgage, a Kent-based mortgage financing company.
Quoting from the national organization’s website, www.operationhomefront.net, “Operation Homefront is a national nonprofit that provides emergency support and morale to our military troops, the families they leave behind during deployment and wounded warriors when they return home.”
Janice Buckley of Snohomish established the Washington chapter about 18 months ago and has since created numerous methods for the public to show their support for our military and their families. Among the activities may volunteer for or contribute money or items to are:

– Computers (to use for connecting families with deployed loved ones)
– Appliance Repairs
– Food Gift Cards
– Gas Gift Cards
– Cash donations
– Used Cars
