On Saturday, Sept. 16, Lakes High School will host the 9th annual Fort Steilacoom Invitational, at Fort Steilacoom Park, 8714 – 87th Avenue SW, Lakewood, Wa.
Over the past eight years, this meet has grown to become one of the largest cross country meets in the state. Teams from all over Washington and Oregon compete in the race. The meet began with 15 teams and 350 runners and has grown to more than 50 teams with more than 1,600 runners and several hundred spectators.
This year’s race will have several teams with top 10 rankings in the state coaches’ poll. The meet features an open race for coaches, parents and community members.
A free 2,000 meter youth race for middle school students is slated along with a full slate of high school races for a full day of racing. A large field is expected to participate this year.
The Fort Steilacoom Invitational is a community event. It has continued to grow because teams value the quality of the meet, the park setting, and the competitive opportunities for all athletes, from the beginner to the elite. Our goal is to continue to improve the meet and bring it to the level of the top meets in the Northwest, not just the South Puget Sound.
