Bijan Ghatan explains the intricacies of oriental rug making to members of the Families in Business Wednesday during a tour of the Bijan Rug Company.
How oriental rugs are manufactured, the time it takes and why they cost as much as they do were some of the subjects covered Wednesday evening when members of the Families in Business, a Lakewood area organization of couples and families who work together in a business, visited the Bijan Rug Company in downtown Tacoma.
Bart Dalton, president of the organization, said Bijan Ghatan, longtime area rug dealer, and Masoud Houshyari, new owner of Bijan Rugs, spent a couple hours explaining how the rugs are manufactured, mostly by women. The tour was arranged by retired Lakewood obstetrician Dr. Mo Sarram and his wife, Fereshteh.
The 20 business people on hand came from Lakewood and University Place. The organization was formed in 1988 as a means for families or couples who work together in a business to share experiences and help each other with ideas and problem solving. The group meets quarterly for educational as well as social programs.
