Everyone knows that: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.
Whether it’s a complete set of dishes to an antique car-you can find it at a garage sale.
Those words could be the unofficial motto of the phenomenon known as Garage Sale-ing-a popular, fair weather past-time for those in search of bargains or for practicing basic magic of transforming trash into cash.
For more than 15 years, the third Saturday in August has been the date for Steilacoom’s Town-wide Garage Sale. Sponsored by the Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce, the traditional event is coordinated by Chamber member Mike Dunsmore. He’s been at the sale’s helm for the past 15 years.
During that time the event has grown from about 25 participants to more than 80. Last year, Mike says, there were 19 merchants on the Tennis Court, and another 72 around town. He expected even more to take part this year.
Garage Sale participants pay a $10 fee to have their names and locations listed on the Garage Sale Map, available at the Tennis Court. Proceeds are earmarked for the Chamber’s annual scholarship fund.
The Steilacoom Chamber partners with Pierce College to offer four $1,000 scholarships annually to graduating SHS students who plan to pursue a business education.
