The 10 families of Southcott Lane in Steilacoom have established a tradition of a 4th of July block party! We gather in the cul de sac about 4 or so after the parade and street fair in town. A couple grills are dragged out, a screen tent is set up for the food and an assortment of tables and chairs appear. Everyone brings their own meats to grill, ranging from steak to hot dogs to shish kebob. A plethora of salads and side dishes and patriotic inspired desserts emerges from front doors up and down the street. We talk, laugh, occasionally sing and bond over delicious food. Usually someone starts up a game of charades for the uninhibited amongst us! As it starts to get dark the sparklers and pop-its surface and the kids beg for more. A dad or two always has a few ‘safe and sane’ fireworks to light up for a festive end to a lovely afternoon. About nine, the tables and chairs are carried back to their homes and remnants of food are packed away. From our street you can watch the highest fireworks explode over the trees. Many of us walk down to town to see the fantastic show up close but some stay right on their porches to finish off a great holiday in patriotic style.
