From the Wednesday edition of the Business Examiner’s BE Daily:
The Washington Transportation Commission yesterday voted to rename the Berkeley Street bridge in Lakewood to Freedom Bridge. The bridge that spans Interstate 5 connects Lakewood to Fort Lewis and has been the scene of pro-military supporters every weekend since Sept. 11, 2001.
Sen. Mike Carrell of the 28th Legislative District and WSDOT Region Administrator Randall Hain, appeared before the Commission to ask for its approval in renaming the bridge, which serves Camp Murray on one side of I-5 and Fort Lewis on the other.
“This bridge for decades, through good times and bad, has been traversed by our military personnel,” said Carrell. “It has been a focus for our community and we ask the Commission for their support to rename this bridge in memory of all the soldiers who have served.”
The Commission also voted to rename a a span of State Route 22 in Toppenish as a Blue Star Memorial Highway, which are sponsored across the nation by National Garden Clubs Inc. and are tributes to military personnel. A Blue Star plaque will be placed near the highway.
