The City of DuPont Fire Department responded, April 17 to a possible hazardous materials spill at State Farm Insurance Company located at 1000 Wilmington Drive. DuPont Fire Department responded to the scene to find the employees of State Farm being evacuated after an employee pulled the fire alarm.
Fort Lewis Fire Department, Steilacoom Public Safety and Madigan Ambulance aided in the response. DuPont Fire Department set up the Incident Command center as crews were briefed on the situation by State Farm personnel. The employees became aware of a strong odor within the building, which seemed to be coming from the boiler room.
Crews, along with a hazardous materials technician, searched the building for any odor and occupants. After searching each floor and the roof, there were no findings of a hazardous material spill. The smell was found in the boiler room, where it was determined to be caused by a mechanical malfunction of the boiler, which caused carbon monoxide and chemical odors to be vented into the office areas. There was one minor exposure generated from this incident.
