Pierce County Library Foundation is asking the community to help extend library services and bring books to people throughout Pierce County. The Library Foundation hopes to raise $180,000 in 2006 to increase funding to underserved populations, especially children.
“Everyone, especially every child, deserves and needs free access to books, information and imagination,” said Lynne Hoffman, director of the Library Foundation. “To see the smiles on the faces of children the Library Foundation helps is priceless. We encourage more people to get involved and help bring those smiles and books to people right here in our Pierce County communities.”
In its spring appeal, the Foundation selected three primary services to receive funding in 2007: the Explorer Kids’ Bookmobile, which serves children living in low-income neighborhoods; early learning services that brings board books, storybooks, DVDs and other materials to childcare facilities; outreach services to people who are homebound.
Funds raised during the Library Foundation’s spring appeal will directly benefit the following services:
- More than 1,300 kids have library cards to use the Explorer Kids’ Bookmobile, and last year they checked out nearly 26,000 books, CDs and other materials.
- Every month, the Library System brings books, movies and more to children in 50 childcare centers and every-other-month the Library System brings materials to nearly 70 family day care centers.
- Every month, Library System staff prepare books, audio books on CD and other materials for delivery to approximately 60 people who are homebound, out of some 8,000 homebound people in the Library System’s service area.
Hoffman said, because the Library System’s service area grew by 47 percent in the past 10 years and its revenues from property taxes barely keep up with costs to run the libraries, donations to the Foundation are increasingly critical to help keep these vital programs and assist people most in need in our communities.
