At its Feb. 22 meeting the Steilacoom Historical School District School Board unanimously passed a resolution authorizing all students residing in the portions of the City of DuPont that are currently within the Clover Park School District to attend schools within the Steilacoom Historical School District No. 1 beginning with the 2006-2007 school year.
According to Penny Jackson, SHSD Assistant Superintendent, students within the City of DuPont need to obtain a Release To Attend Form from Clover Park School District Student Services Center located at 10903 Gravelly Lake Dr SW, Lakewood, WA 98499, 253-583-5000.
Return the completed form to Clover Park School District Student Services Center for their consent and signature. Bring the completed form with Clover Park School District’s consent and signature to the SHSD Office located at 510 Chambers Street, Steilacoom, WA 98388.
Jackson recommends that parents of students, living within the City of DuPont, who wish to transfer to SHSD, should begin the process in late June/early July. For additional information about these procedures, please contact Penny Jackson at 253-983-2200.
While the resolution had already been scheduled on the evening’s agenda and was a separate action, the school board was pleased to announce that earlier that day, the Washington State Court of Appeals denied Clover Park School District’s appeal of the Educational Service District’s (ESD) boundary decision to bring all of the City of DuPont within Steilacoom Historical School District No. 1 boundaries.
“This is indeed a celebratory day for the DuPont/Northwest Landing citizens,” said Dr. Art Himmler, SHSD superintendent.
“The citizens of DuPont have tried to achieve this school boundary adjustment since 1987, trying various avenues. To see this decision come out in their favor affirms their strongly-held desire to determine their own destiny, as a City, and to control the assets of their community for the benefit of their own citizens and students, rather than for another separate city entity.”
