Every year in Pierce County about 200 infants die. Across Washington state, the number is about 1,000 infant deaths each year. The pain and devastation felt by parents and the families of these children is immeasurable, but there is an organization working to help ease the burden somewhat. The TEARS Foundation compassionately reaches out to newly bereaved parents who have lost a baby by providing funds to assist with the cost of burial or cremation services.
The group has been helping families in Pierce County since 2003 and this year, because of the need has decided to reach out to all of Western Washington. TEARS is the only resource of this kind available in Washington state.
The group will be putting on several fundraising events throughout the year in order to help newly bereaved parents. TEARS will be holding a walk-a-thon at Fircrest Park on March 25.
So far, TEARS has helped 21 families in Pierce County with funeral expenses for their infants.
