The 12th annual RAGS show will take place March 10&12, 2006, at Mercedes-Benz of Tacoma. Creative clothing, fashion accessories, and unusual jewelry from more than 50 artists of local, regional, and national acclaim are for sale at the boutique-style show. Having raised more than $400,000 to date, RAGS is YWCA Pierce County’s largest private funding source. A portion of all sales goes to domestic violence prevention and intervention programs.
Many artists are from the Puget Sound area, but others come to the show-or send their wares-from around the country. Because of space limitations, the juried show annually turns away almost as many artists as it accepts. All agree to donate one-third of their sales to the RAGS Guild. And months before the show, the all-volunteer guild solicits local individuals and businesses for monetary and in-kind donations to defray show expenses. As a result, nearly 100 percent of show proceeds go directly to the YWCA.
Indeed, what sets the RAGS Show apart, according to Ann Gosch, RAGS marketing chair, is that it combines creative shopping with fundraising for a very worthy cause. “Shopping at RAGS means finding an eye-catching jacket or funky earrings to add pizzazz to your everyday wardrobe, while also feeling good about giving back to the community. We like to call it ‚Äòguilt-free shopping’!”
The RAGS show offers something in every price range, Gosch says, from very affordable beaded bracelets and hand-stamped T-shirts to luxurious silk wraps and posh gold pendants. Besides its boutique-style “Marketplace” sale, RAGS also features a gallery-style competition of one-of-a-kind garments, accessories, and jewelry. Judged by well-known names in the arts community, the winners in several categories, including best in show, earn cash awards. Some of these special works are for sale, giving shoppers the opportunity to own an award-winning piece of wearable art.
The RAGS show is open to the public at no charge at Mercedes-Benz of Tacoma, 4001 20th St. East, just off Interstate 5 in Fife. Show hours are Friday and Saturday, March 10 and 11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, March 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The preview benefit gala will be Thursday, March 9, 6 to 9 p.m. Gala reservations are $65 per person and may be made by calling the RAGS hotline at 253-272-4181, ext. 352.
