Once again, The Lakewood Playhouse has galvanized local merchants into providing an enjoyable evening of theatre mixed with pre-Christmas treats to a group of families who had little chance of availing themselves of a theatrical experience.
This year when Lynn Geyer approached Marcus Walker, Managing Artistic Director of the Lakewood Playhouse, with the idea of repeating the past three year’s successful evening by providing free tickets for the upcoming show, Hard Knock Christmas, A Musical Revue, he answered with a resounding, “Yes.”
Walker concurred he wanted again to open the theatre’s “preview” night dress rehearsal to novice theatre-goers. “This has become an annual event for Lakewood Playhouse,” Walker said.
Walker told Geyer to invite 15 families again this year. He also agreed to furnish the 75 family members with some free intermission treats.
Geyer contacted Lanae Olson, the counselor at Cherrydale Elementary for help. Olson contacted Mario Reeves and Coleman Fannin, the counselors Saltar’s Point and Chloe Clark Elementary, respectively. Together, they selected 15 Steilacoom school children and their families.
The next step was finding donations from local merchants to fill the Christmas stockings each family will be given at the December 7 performance.
“We have had an overwhelming response to our requests the past three years,” said Geyer. “This year has been even more remarkable. We asked for products or gift certificate from each store to include in the stockings. The list of donors is astounding: Albertson’s, Appleby’s, Arby’s, Baskin-Robbins, Bair Drugs, Blimpies, Burger King, Cascade Bagel, Casa Mia, Chocolate Frog, Cold Stone Creamery, Cookies by Design, Denny’s, Domino’s, Espresso By the Bay, The Goodwill, Happy Teriyaki, The House of Donuts, Hunan Garden, I Hop, Jack-in-the Box, K-Mart, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Kin Ja Teriyaki, La Palma, Le Le II, McDonald’s, Mis Tres Amigos, Old Country Buffet, Pizza Hut, QFC, Rite Aid, Saar’s Market Place, Safeway, Skipper’s, Steilacoom Deli and Pub, Subway, Sunny Teriyaki, Target, Tijuana Taco, Walgreen’s and Wendy’s.”
Geyer finalized the coordination by printing theatre and treat tickets to go with the vouchers for the Christmas stockings. These she put together with a welcome letter of explanation to give to the school counselors who will disseminate them through the children of the selected families.
A community effort guaranteed to give 15 families a chance to have a truly memorable Pre-Christmas experience.
The Lakewood Playhouse is located in the northeast corner of Lakewood Towne Center, next to the Pierce Transit Terminal.
