The University Place City Council passed a condemnation ordinance at
its Nov. 7 meeting that makes it possible for the city to acquire
properties on the west side of Bridgeport Way West for right-of-way
purposes to consruct Larson Lane, connecting roads and public spaces.
Identified in the city’s six year transportation improvement plan,
Larson Lane would run from 35th to 40th streets behind Green
Firs, the Briarview Apartments and the Coldwell Banker building.
The road would take some traffic off Bridgeport Way West and improve
traffic flow in the city’s core business zone.
The ordinance authorizes the city manager to buy the Briarview Apartments property and the Coldwell Banker property along with strips of land in front of businesses just north of 37th Street West. The city is currently negotiating with the owners of these properties for a fair price, but the condemnation ordinance allows the city to put the matter before a court to set the price if an agreement cannot be reached with the owners.
The city has already purchased the property on the northwest corner of 35th Street West and Bridgeport Way West for the same rights of way purposes.
