The League of Women Voters of Tacoma-Pierce County
will sponsor a public forum on Oct. 5, to present pros and cons on
the ballot question for Lakewood voters concerning adoption of
initiative and referendum powers in that city. Four panelists will present various
viewpoints following an explanation of the issue by a League
representative. There will be an audience question and answer opportunity
also. The first forum will be held at the Lakewood United Methodist
Church, 6900 Steilacoom Blvd. It begins at 7 p.m.
The moderator for the event is Peter Callaghan, political columnist for
The News Tribune. Representing the pro side of the debate will be Shawn Newman, an Olympia attorney and the Washington state director of the Initiative
Referendum Institute, along with Lakewood citize Hugh Hedges. On the con side of the debate will be Jacki Skaught, a Tacoma citizen and local League of Women Voters member, along with Lakewood citizen Bob Warfield.
The second forum is set for Oct. 6 at the Tillicum-Woodbrook Neighborhood Association from 6:30-8 p.m. It will take place at the Tillicum Community Center, 14916 Washington
Ave. Speaking for the pro side of the debate will again be Hugh Hedges and for the con side is Bob Warfield.
The third debate is set for Oct. 13. It is sponsored by Lakewood United and will be held at 7 a.m. at Burs Restaurant,
6151 Steilacoom Blvd.
SW. Speaking for the pro side will be Lakewood citizen David Anderson, and for the con side is Bob Warfield.
