Chambers Bay Realty, owned by Carole Tinsley, was named
Steilacoom’s 2005 Business of the Year by the Steilacoom Chamber of Commerce at the organization’s annual membership dinner, held at Oberlin Congreational Church. This is the first time the Chamber has acknowledged a local business with the honor, however, it plans to continue the tradition in years to come.
Dentist Tom McAvoy of McAvoy’s Family Dentistry, was cited as the runner up.
Chamber President Don Rehburg presented the annual awards, citing the business owners’ numerous contributions to the community. Tinsley and McAvoy are both charter members of the Chamber, which was reorganized in the early 1980s.
The 120-plus member Chamber is one of the oldest business organizations of its kind in Pierce County. Steilacoom’s chamber was first established in the 1930s by Neil Henly. Membership is comprised of storefront businesses and home-based businesses in this waterfront community.
Besides coordinating town events such as the 4th of July celebration and the December holiday tree lighting, both in cooperation with the Town of Steilacoom, the Chamber annually awards four scholarships to graduating seniors from Steilacoom High School.
Steilacoom, Pierce County’s first incorporated town (1854) was founded in 1851 (Port of Steilacoom and Steilacoom City). The 2.1 square mile town commemorated its Sesquicentennial in 2004.
