Producing a weekly print newspaper for Lakewood or even Lakewood and University Place combined just isn’t financially feasible, David Zeeck, executive editor of The News Tribune told members of the Lakewood Rotary Club Friday noon, Sept. 23.
In responding to a question about why there never seems to be much
Lakewood news in the paper, Zeeck said they have looked at producing
what would be a weekly newspaper for the community but financially it
wouldn’t work, he explained.
The newspaper executive told the
Rotarians that in other parts of the world sex was used a great deal
more to entice readership than in this country.
Zeeck said The
News Tribune tries to have equal parts news and advertising in its
pages. He pointed out that surveys indicate younger readers are getting
more news online than older people and newspapers are continuing to
develop online versions.
"I think the future for newspapers
continues to be good," Zeeck said. He pointed out that the
proliferation of television channels has resulted in individual
stations and networks having a considerably lower number of viewers
each. Newspaper circulation has not dipped anywhere near as much
because each is focused on a particular area.
