Lakewood’s Parks and Recreation master plan sets an ambitious goal – to have a park or open space area within half a mile of every home in the city. Civic leaders hope to accomplish this goal in part by designating schoolyards as neighborhood parks.
Using a grant from the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department city staff in association with Clover Park School district staff would develop a pilot project using Woodbrook Middle School as a test site. The city and school district would address issues such as safe access to the site, when school areas could be accessed by the community, liability, who maintains the grounds and other issues that are expected to come up during the process. The first meeting of a committe of city and school district staff to discuss this issue is scheduled for Sept 30.
