The University Place Economic Development Committee and Planning
Commission agree that drive-thrus, including gas stations, should not
be allowed in the city’s main business district, defined as Bridgeport
Way West from 35th to 40th streets. Members of the two advisory
committees met in a joint session on Aug. 24 to discuss the issue. They
sent their recommendation to the City Council, which will hold a public
hearing on the matter on Sept. 19.
In their recommendation, the members of the advisory committees said all current drive-thrus should be considered non-conforming and allowed to fade away as redevelopment occurs instead of being forced out through an amortization process. The committee members did recommend making valet services exempt from the drive up and drive through ban.
