Several residents of DuPont have reported too-close-for-comfort
encounters with racoons on the streets, prompting city officials to
issue a warning about the animals. The warning states that the racoons’
odd behavior is most likely a result of people feeding the racoons,
leading to the animals losing their natural fear of humans. The danger
is small children or pets may come into contact with a raccoon, which
may bite, scratch or otherwise react to protect itself if it comes to
To keep racoons and other wildlife away from homes, eliminate food
sources such as pet food and garbage outside. Feed all pets inside if
possible and tightly seal the lids of garbage cans so the animals will
not be tempted to come near.
