Lakewood United leaders informally organized in 1970 to promote the first petitions for Cityhood. After a couple of failed attempts Lakewood United then evolved into a formal community information forum in 1981 to cover any issue of interest to Lakewood residents.
For many years Lakewood United was joined to The Lakewood Chamber of Commerce as their community action committee. About 1999 the Chamber preferred a different arrangement and Lakewood United proceeded with its own decisions on topics proper for all the citizens and businesses of Lakewood, including the successful incorporation and cityhood.
Speakers at Lakewood United may be the City Manager or the Governor or State or U.S. Representatives or authorities in many sciences and issues that daily affect Lakewood residents. The group may learn about State budget challenges or 30,000 new Joint Base Lewis-McChord residents or the Civil War reenactment at Ft. Steilacoom or our own City Treasures such as Lakewold Gardens or Thornewood Castle.
All are invited to the weekly meetings (7 am each Thursday) at Bur’s Restaurant (map). Dues are just $20 per year.
