Morgan, alias “Col. Silas B. Casey,” told about his three sons, Thomas, Silas III, and Edward, during Historic Fort Steilacoom’s historic preservation month program on May 15. Two sons attended West Point, as was traditional at that time, while a third, Silas III, attended the Naval Academy, Morgan said.
There’s a new research library in the Lakewood region. This one specializes in Pacific Northwest Military History and content between 1848-1871. Historic Ft. Steilacoom’s Research Library was officially opened on April 16. Lakewood’s Deputy Mayor Jason Whalen joined fort dignitaries this past Saturday for the official “ribbon cutting”.

The South Sound Military & Communities Partnership (SSMCP) conducted a survey of residents and businesses near Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Pierce and Thurston Counties to gather information about their knowledge of, attitudes about, and dependence on the base.
72% of residents and 84% of businesses feel that JBLM is a good to excellent neighbor. However, 49% of residents and 67% of businesses feel traffic is a significantly negative issue in the JBLM area.

DuPont, WA – Local teacher and retired US Army Lt. Colonel, Mike Winkler will run for the State House of Representatives for the 28th District, which serves South West Pierce County. Winkler was previously elected to two terms on the Steilacoom Historical School District Board.
“I believe in public service. That’s why I volunteered for the Army and became a teacher for a second career. It’s also why I’m running to represent our community in Olympia,“ said Winkler.
