Steilacoom is a native American word that means “Pink Flower”. While East Coasters rely on the prognostication of Punxatawney Phil (the Groundhog that supposedly predicts the return of spring in six weeks) Steilacoomites just watch the gnarled apple tree on the Orr Property (next to the Wagon Shop) for the return of the porcelain-like pink blossoms that bloom in late April/early May. During the next few weeks, a series of “In Progress” photos will track the return of the blooms–kind of like the return of the swallows to Capistrano.
In the meantime, take note that Steilacoom’s Historical Museum opens for its regular season beginning April 1–both Saturdays and Sundays. Take time to visit the museum that features a glimpse of early Steilacoom history. Phone 584-4133 for information about hours of operation or visit www.steilacoomhistorical.org
