LAKEWOOD, WA — Mayor Doug Richardson will gain a new neighbor and Lakewood residents seeking social services will reduce their travel time when the Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) moves into new offices this month.
At 8 a.m., Monday, Sept. 29, the DSHS Community Service Office (CSO) will open at its new location next to Lakewood City Hall on 5712 Main Street.
DSHS Community Service Offices provide a vital first link to social services and resources for the community. The Lakewood CSO offers a range of DSHS services, including food stamps, emergency assistance, medical and pregnancy support, voter registration, child support information and more. The CSO serves approximately 30,000 clients in Lakewood and surrounding areas.
The move will enable Lakewood residents to be served in their own community. The CSO location currently serving Lakewood residents at 1949 South State Street, in Tacoma will be open until Sept. 24. The CSO will close for two business days, Thursday, Sept. 25, and Friday, Sept. 26, to facilitate the move and re-open at the new Main Street offices on Sept. 29. Business hours will remain 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday – Friday. All 90 Lakewood CSO staff based at the Tacoma location will move to the new site.
Clients already registered or receiving services will continue to work with the same staff members. Phone numbers for individual staff members will change, but a recorded message to the old phone number will direct callers to the new number. Lakewood residents can continue to call the CSO call center at (253) 476-6800.
